Government Invests in 10km of Underground Cables to Boost Gozo's Electricity Network

The Government of Malta has launched a major infrastructure project in Gozo, involving the installation of over 10 kilometres of new underground electricity cables. The initiative, led by the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo and Planning, aims to improve electricity service reliability and strengthen the island’s connection to the national grid.

During a site visit, Energy Minister Miriam Dalli and Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri, together with Enemalta Executive Chairman Eng. Ryan Fava, announced that seven new substations were already commissioned across Gozo in 2024. Another five substations are planned for 2025 as part of continued expansion in Kerċem, Xagħra, Marsalforn, St. Lawrence, Sannat, Xewkija, and Għarb.

Minister Dalli highlighted the significance of the project in delivering stable and modern energy services to residents and businesses in Gozo. Minister Camilleri echoed this by emphasizing the impact on improving daily life and infrastructure sustainability.

Currently, 11kV underground cables are being installed in Żebbuġ (Marsalforn) and Victoria, further linking key distribution centres and substations. The government described these upgrades as vital to creating a more flexible and resilient national energy network, reducing service disruptions and improving response times.

Eng. Fava praised the cooperation between Enemalta, ministries, and local councils, calling the project “a robust step forward in ensuring long-term energy security for Gozo.”
