Energy Minister Miriam Dalli thanks workers as IC1 is back in full operation

The first interconnector (IC1) has been safely restored to service following the completion of essential technical interventions at the Ragusa Terminal Station in Sicily. The works, which represent a significant step forward in the delivery of the second interconnector (IC2), were carried out whilst maintaining full national electricity stability.

Minister for Energy Miriam Dalli has thanked workers for the successful completion of this round of works by Enemalta plc and Interconnect Malta (ICM). The works were coordinated by Enemalta, Interconnect Malta, Terna Energy Solutions, and the Italian Transmission System Operator.

“Maintaining national electricity stability is always a priority during such works, and achieving it is no small feat. The diligent and professional service of these technical teams ensured that these complex works were finalised within the established timeframe, prioritising safety and system reliability,” the Minister stated.

As announced last Saturday, the scheduled intervention required the temporary suspension of IC1 to allow for the safe rerouting of control cables in preparation for the foundations of a new 220kV hybrid switchgear. This equipment is vital for the integration of the IC2, providing the necessary infrastructure to connect spare shunt reactors and enhance the resilience of both interconnectors.

Throughout a two-day period, Enemalta ensured that the national grid remained stable and secure.

Projects such as IC2, which is co-financed by the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), are essential for reducing carbon emissions and facilitating the further integration of large-scale renewable energy sources.
