Malta joins other EU Member States to alleviate Syria’s humanitarian situation

Malta is once again joining other EU member states in pledging financial assistance to support Syrian communities facing humanitarian difficulties inside Syria, in neighbouring countries, and their host communities in Türkiye, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq.

The EU’s financial assistance to the people of Syria for 2024 and 2025 was announced during the eighth edition of the Brussels Conference on ‘Supporting the future of Syria and the region’, held in Brussels on Monday evening. Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg and the Permanent Representation of Malta to the EU represented Malta during this meeting. 

The economic and humanitarian crises in Syria and the situation of Syrian refugees in the neighbouring countries continue to deteriorate. The financial assistance pledged by Malta and other member states is part of an EU-wide effort to continue addressing this deteriorating humanitarian situation.

During the meeting, Malta reiterated its determined commitment to peace, security, and stability in the region and emphasised the importance of reconvening the Constitutional Committee, a key step in the UN-facilitated political process.

Malta also commended the efforts of Syria’s neighbours, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Türkiye in hosting Syrian refugees, while also calling for greater support for these countries to improve their resilience and development.
