Euro Area Unemployment at 6.4% in April 202

In April 2024, the seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in the euro area fell to 6.4%, a slight decrease from 6.5% in March 2024 and April 2023. Meanwhile, the EU unemployment rate remained steady at 6.0%, unchanged from both the previous month and April 2023, according to Eurostat, the European Union's statistical office.


Eurostat reported that 13.149 million people in the EU, including 10.998 million in the euro area, were unemployed in April 2024. This represents a decrease of 103,000 unemployed individuals in the EU and 100,000 in the euro area compared to March 2024. However, compared to April 2023, the number of unemployed rose by 95,000 in the EU but fell by 101,000 in the euro area.


Youth unemployment figures show that 2.830 million people under 25 were jobless in the EU, with 2.272 million of them in the euro area. The youth unemployment rate in April 2024 was 14.4% in the EU, down from 14.7% in March 2024, and 14.1% in the euro area, down from 14.3%. This month-to-month improvement saw youth unemployment drop by 44,000 in the EU and by 19,000 in the euro area. However, on an annual basis, youth unemployment increased by 141,000 in the EU and by 54,000 in the euro area.


In terms of gender, the unemployment rate for women in the EU was 6.3% in April 2024, a slight decrease from 6.4% in March 2024, while the rate for men remained stable at 5.7%. In the euro area, the unemployment rate for women dropped to 6.7% from 6.9%, and the rate for men stayed consistent at 6.1%.
