JOINT STATEMENT BY THE MINISTRY FOR TRANSPORT, INFRASTRUCTURE, AND PUBLIC WORKS AND THE LIGHT PASSENGER OPERATORS ASSOCIATION

This statement addresses media reports about a protest called by the Light Passenger Operators Association on Monday, 3rd June 2024. While it is confirmed that a public demonstration was registered and scheduled, the Ministry and the Association continued discussions to address the numerous issues affecting operators within the sector.

Although dialogue and discussions have been ongoing for the past months, both parties have agreed on several key points that are to be addressed to ensure sustainability for self-employed operators within the sector.

These reforms includes proposed key measures that seek to better regulate the special license requirements (tags) aimed at ensuring safety and driver experience on the Maltese roads, as well as measures to regulate the current supply demographic in the industry.

In view of the proposed Geo-Fencing implementation in specific areas, the Association shall also be included in such discussions aimed to implement such measures in a holistic approach.
