EU Organic Farming Reaches 16.9 Million Hectares in 2022

The European Union saw continued growth in organic agricultural production, with 16.9 million hectares dedicated to organic farming in 2022, up from 15.9 million hectares in 2021 and 14.7 million hectares in 2020. This represents 10.5% of the total utilised agricultural area (UAA) in the EU.


From 2012 to 2022, almost all EU countries increased their organic farming areas. Croatia experienced the most significant growth at 306%, followed by Portugal at 278% and Bulgaria at 182%.


Austria, Estonia, and Sweden had the highest proportions of organic farming within their total UAA, with shares of 27%, 23%, and 20% respectively. Conversely, five EU countries had less than 5% of their agricultural area dedicated to organic farming in 2022, with Malta at under 1%, and Bulgaria and Ireland both at 2%.


These statistics were released by Eurostat, highlighting key findings from a comprehensive report available on the Statistics Explained platform.
