Anti-Tax Riots Erupt in Kenya; Military Deployed

Kenyan President William Ruto deployed the military yesterday to quell what he described as “treasonous” protests after thousands of demonstrators flooded Nairobi’s streets, outraged by recent tax increases. The protesters stormed the Parliament building and set fire to its entrance.

Police responded with tear gas and gunfire, resulting in at least five deaths from gunshot wounds and over 30 injuries, according to a joint statement by Amnesty International and several Kenyan civic organizations. These numbers have yet to be independently verified.

The tax hikes have faced widespread criticism, with many Kenyans arguing they will significantly increase the cost of living. However, the government maintains that the legislation is essential for generating revenue for key initiatives.
