Israel and Egypt Discuss Potential Border Withdrawal Amid Cease-Fire Negotiations

Israel and Egypt have been privately discussing the possibility of withdrawing Israeli soldiers from Gaza’s border with Egypt, according to officials. This move could eliminate a significant barrier to reaching a cease-fire agreement with Hamas after more than nine months of conflict in the Gaza Strip.

Negotiations for a truce have gained momentum recently, though key issues remain unresolved. One major sticking point is the duration of the cease-fire: Hamas insists on a permanent truce, while Israel seeks a temporary one. Additionally, Hamas demands that Israel withdraw from areas including the Egypt-Gaza border.

The Israeli military secured control of Gaza’s southern border in May and June, pushing Hamas away from a crucial axis used for smuggling arms and supplies into Gaza. This action has also complicated Israel’s relations with Egypt.

In related developments, China plans to host senior Palestinian officials from Hamas and Fatah next week to discuss the future of the Gaza Strip.
