Bangaldeshi Community in Malta hold protest on situation in their country

The Bangladeshi Community in Malta held a peaceful protest today outside the European Parliament Office in St Pauls’ Street Valletta.

During the protest, several speakers recounted the harrowing experiences which the Bangaldeshi nation is currently undergoing, including the beating and killing of protestors, the imposition of a draconian curfew as well as a communications blackout.

Bangladesh Malta Business Association Secretary Nazmul Istiak outlined the demands of the protestors which are; a change in government, prosecution of those who committed atrocities and killings as well as justice for those whose family members were murdered.

Another protest will take place on Tuesday 30^th July in front of the Maltese Parliament in Freedom Square Valletta.

Background: The student quota movement in Bangladesh began as a peaceful protest demanding reforms in the quota system for government jobs, aiming to ensure merit-based opportunities for all students. However, the government's response has been excessively violent, resulting in deaths, injuries, and disappearances of student activists. These actions amount to a genocide against students, threatening their fundamental rights and freedoms.
