New Poll Shows Tighter U.S. Race

Kamala Harris begins a 103-day sprint for the presidency in a virtual tie with Donald Trump, according to the latest New York Times/Siena College poll, which showed Democrats rallying behind the vice president as the presumptive nominee. Only 14 percent of Democrats said they would prefer another option.

Trump led Harris 48 percent to 47 percent among likely voters and 48 percent to 46 percent among registered voters in a head-to-head match, marking a significant improvement for Democrats compared to Biden’s earlier standings. At rallies, Trump has labeled Harris a left-wing radical and a “lunatic.”

Harris has rapidly reassembled the Democratic coalition, narrowing the gap Trump had over Biden. She secured 93 percent support from Democrats in the poll, matching Trump's support from Republicans. Insiders expect Barack Obama to endorse her candidacy soon.

Harris is performing better than Biden among younger and nonwhite voters, although some Democrats are concerned she might not maintain Biden's support among older voters, where the poll shows some erosion.

For more details, the poll reveals unique findings this cycle, apart from Trump’s slight lead, as noted by Nate Cohn.
