Hamas Commander Ismail Haniyeh Assassinated in Iran

Ismail Haniyeh, a top Hamas leader, was assassinated in Tehran, according to announcements from both Hamas and Iranian officials this morning. The killing of Haniyeh, a significant figure within the militant group, poses the risk of escalating tensions in the already volatile region.

Hamas has accused Israel of carrying out the assassination. Haniyeh, who managed Hamas's political operations from Qatar, was in Tehran for the inauguration of Iran's newly elected president, along with other militant group leaders supported by Iran, including Hezbollah. Israel has not commented on the incident.

As the political leader of Hamas, Haniyeh played a crucial role in the group's negotiations and diplomatic efforts, including stalled cease-fire talks with Israel over the Gaza conflict.
