Iran Warns of Retaliation as Tensions Escalate

In the latest developments of the ongoing conflict, three senior Iranian officials told Reuters that only a cease-fire deal in Gaza would prevent Iran from directly retaliating against Israel. Iran’s foreign ministry criticized calls for restraint from France, Germany, and the U.K., arguing that these demands contradict international law and the principles of regional stability.

Amid these tensions, Fitch Ratings downgraded Israel's credit rating, citing concerns over the prolonged Gaza conflict potentially extending into 2025. Iran has reportedly expressed fears that Israel and the U.S. might target its nuclear program in retaliation for any direct attack.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is scheduled to visit Israel, Qatar, and Egypt on Tuesday to discuss the situation. The White House has warned that a direct attack by Iran could occur as soon as this week.

In recent military actions, Israel’s Defense Forces (IDF) have struck Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah has fired rockets into northern Israel. Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has emphasized that the country is preparing for various scenarios, including a potential escalation with Hezbollah.

The latest cease-fire talks have seen Israel adopting a more rigid stance, including new demands that complicate negotiations. Despite these challenges, there are ongoing efforts to reach an agreement that could alleviate the current crisis.
