Justice Juan Merchan is confronted with a monumental decision regarding the sentencing of former President Donald Trump. More than three months after Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, Merchan must decide whether to proceed with sentencing on September 18 or delay the decision until after the November 5 election, as requested by Trump.
The sentencing has been postponed since a Supreme Court ruling in July granted Trump partial immunity. If Merchan chooses to delay, the American public will go to the polls without knowing whether Trump will face jail time. Conversely, if the judge proceeds with the sentencing, Trump is expected to claim that the decision was an attempt to influence the election in favor of his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, adding to the already heated political climate.
