Venezuela’s Opposition Candidate Flees to Spain After Arrest Warrant

Edmundo González, the opposition candidate believed to have won Venezuela’s disputed July presidential election, fled to Spain on Saturday following the issuance of an arrest warrant. Venezuelan authorities have charged González with conspiracy, usurping power, and sabotage after President Nicolás Maduro claimed victory in the controversial election.

The move has sparked outrage both in Venezuela and abroad, with Maduro’s administration facing condemnation for the violent crackdown on protestors. International calls for action have grown as the situation in Venezuela continues to worsen under Maduro’s regime.
