Major U.S. Union Refuses to Endorse Harris or Trump in 2024 Election

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, a union representing 1.3 million workers, announced it will not endorse any presidential candidate for the 2024 election. The decision deals a significant blow to Vice President Kamala Harris, who had secured endorsements from other major labor unions.

The move also reflects the influence of Donald Trump, who has courted union president Sean O'Brien, despite his past appointment of anti-labor officials. The Teamsters had previously endorsed Democratic candidates, including President Biden in 2020, but O’Brien’s openness to Trump has caused internal divisions within the union. In particular, two Teamsters councils representing 300,000 workers, including those in the battleground state of Nevada, have declared their support for Harris.
