E.U. Appoints New Defense Chief Amid Ukraine War

The European Union has created a new defense commissioner post, filled by former Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius, to address defense industry coordination as the war in Ukraine continues. The role, however, will not oversee an E.U. army but focus on bolstering the European arms sector by promoting standardized production and cooperative purchasing.

This move by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reflects ongoing concerns about the continent’s defense capabilities and uncertainty regarding U.S. commitments to Europe.
