The President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono, received a courtesy visit by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Montenegro, Ervin Ibrahimović.


During the exchange, President Spiteri Debono spoke about the positive bilateral relations between the Republic of Malta and Montenegro which could be further strengthened through better connectivity and collaboration, highlighting the benefits that emerge from cooperation between small states on the regional and international stage.


Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ibrahimović expressed his appreciation for Malta’s ongoing support for Montenegro’s candidacy for European Union membership, describing Malta’s active participation on the global stage in recent times as an example for other small nations.


President Spiteri Debono commended Montenegro’s ongoing efforts towards reaching the necessary criteria required for accession to the European Union, particularly in terms of foreign and security policy, as well as the alignment with Western sanctions against the Russian Federation in light of the invasion of Ukraine. 


Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ibrahimović explained that the progress made by Montenegro with the intention of acceding to the European Union by 2028 may serve as an impetus for other candidates for EU membership in the Western Balkans.
