Hybrid and Electric Cars Account for Nearly Half of EU Registrations in 2023

In 2023, hybrid and battery-only electric cars made up 48.3% of all new passenger car registrations in the European Union, nearly matching the combined share of traditional petrol and diesel vehicles at 48.8%. This marks a significant shift in consumer preferences toward more sustainable vehicle options.

Out of the 10.7 million passenger cars registered in the EU last year, petrol cars maintained the largest share at 34.5%, followed by non-plug-in hybrid petrol-electric cars at 21.1%, battery-only electric cars at 14.5%, and diesel cars at 14.3%.

Finland led the EU in adopting hybrid and electric vehicles, with these cars comprising 78% of new registrations, split between 44% hybrids and 34% battery-only electric vehicles. Sweden and the Netherlands followed, with 69% and 68% shares, respectively.

On the other end of the spectrum, Bulgaria recorded the lowest adoption rate of hybrid and electric vehicles, at just 7%, trailed by Czechia at 20% and Croatia at 28%.

These findings, published by Eurostat, underscore the ongoing transition in the EU automotive market toward greener technologies.
