President Myriam Spiteri Debono welcomed Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, for a courtesy meeting at San Anton Palace ahead of Malta’s Presidency of the Council of Europe from May to November.
Discussions focused on youth participation in democracy, children’s rights, equality, and domestic violence—key priorities of Malta’s presidency. The President reaffirmed Malta’s commitment to peace, unity, stability, and human rights, emphasizing that these values would guide its leadership.
Berset highlighted the significance of Malta’s role during a period of global crises, stressing that its work should extend beyond the presidency to benefit future generations. The President also noted that Malta has led the ILGA index for LGBTQ+ rights for the past nine years.
The meeting was attended by Francesca Camilleri, Alberta Borg, Reuben Sciberras, Darren Camilleri, Major Richard Vassallo, and Christian Vella Masini.
