Canada’s Getting a New Leader

The Liberal Party of Canada has chosen Mark Carney, a technocrat with extensive experience in financial markets, to replace Justin Trudeau as its leader and the country’s next prime minister. Carney, who previously led the Bank of Canada through the 2008 financial crisis and the Bank of England during Brexit, won 85.9% of the votes cast by more than 150,000 Liberal Party members.

Despite his strong economic credentials, Carney has never held elected office. He is expected to be sworn in as prime minister early this week, officially marking the end of Trudeau’s tenure. However, since he does not currently hold a seat in Parliament, he is likely to call federal elections soon. His main challenger in the upcoming election will be Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Conservative Party.
