Iran and Hamas Vow Retaliation Following Haniyeh Assassination

The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, a senior Hamas leader, in Tehran has heightened tensions across the Middle East, with both Iran and Hamas pledging retaliation. The killing threatens to derail ongoing negotiations for a Gaza cease-fire.

Iran and Hamas have accused Israel of orchestrating Haniyeh's assassination, although Israel has not confirmed or denied involvement. The potential for a retaliatory strike by Iran and its allies raises concerns about a broader regional conflict. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, promised a “harsh punishment” and indicated he had ordered a direct strike against Israel.

This incident follows a series of high-profile assassinations in Iran attributed to Israel. In November, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly stated that he had instructed the Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence agency, to target Hamas leaders wherever they are.
