Is Malta Becoming Less Tourist-Friendly? Or Are Tourists Being Treated as a Source of Fine
Malta is one of Europe’s most beautiful tourist destinations, famous for its beaches, sunshine, history, culture and hospitality. Tourism is a major part of the country’s economy.
Malta has a hot Mediterranean climate, particularly during the summer. Tourists naturally want to wear light and comfortable clothing while enjoying the beaches, streets and tourist attractions.
Of course, reasonable dress rules in churches, religious sites and other sensitive places should be respected. But there is also a difference between maintaining public standards and creating an environment where tourists feel they can unexpectedly receive a fine because of what they are wearing.

If Malta wants to attract more tourists, the priority should be hospitality, clear information and education — not creating the perception that visitors are being punished or “milked” through fines.
