Venus Restaurant - St. Paul’s Bay

Venus Restaurant - St. Paul’s Bay (Bugibba)
Dinner - Saturday, 4thMay, 2024.
Venus Restaurant in Bugibba, is one of those restaurants that no matter how often one visits, the dining experience is always a highly enjoyable event, with great food which is certainly fine dining, excellent service as this establishment is family managed and run hands-on by the Curmi family led by Reuben Curmi, his wife Joanne who is an excellent host, and their sons Roberto and Andrea who lead the service team assisted by a good team of servers.
Booked a table for four persons for dinner, last Saturday. Arrived on time and were duly greeted by Mrs. Curmi and seated at our reserved table. The restaurant was throbbing with clients when we got there with the dinner service in full swing.
The a la carte menu, daily specials board and wine list were proferred, and once our food and wine selections were made, baskets of very fresh Maltese bread with dips, were placed on our table.
The food:
An appetizing caprese salad and a tasting of the home-made chicken pate’ on toasted brioche were served as amuse bouche to share.
These were followed by our order for four Gillardeau oysters to enjoy pre-starters with a glass or two of our wine selection.
A very good start to our dinner.
The fresh fish selections for the day were brought to the table for us to choose from, including a live crab in which I showed interest from the daily specials board.
Starters:
Individual orders for starters were made and served as follows:
Arancini prawns -three rice balls stuffed with prawn meat;
The fresh tuna tartar; (chunk of exceptionally fresh, red tuna was shown to us at the table).
Traditional fresh fish and seafood aljotta. This was served in two parts, the fish and seafood and the warm fish bisque was poured on at the table. This was ordered by my wife.
And for myself I selected the Scallops Thermidor. Three good sized scallops, sprinkled with white wine, herbs and Parmesan cheese.
Main courses:
For main course my son and his wife selected a 1.2 kg grouper to be oven baked, to be shared.
The cooked fish was brought to the table whole and was filleted and portioned by Roberto at the table.
Ample condiments of roasted potatoes and veg in season were served on the side.
My self and my wife selected the Pasta with Crab to be shared between us.
This was a substantial serving of an excellent linguine portion cooked perfectly Al dente, and tossed in the crab bisque sauce with cherry tomatoes and herbs, and served with chunks of the crab meat,
Dessert: Two servings of the Sgroppino (sorbets mixed with Prosecco and served in a long glass); and a portion of the date parcels with vanilla ice-cream which was shared between myself and my wife over an espresso.
Wine: Two bottles of the Rioja Monopole 2023 were perfectly paired with our food. Two bottles of water, espressos and complimentary grappas and liqueurs, complimented our dinner.
Service: Service as usual very attentive and efficient on all tables with a very full restaurant.
Value: The bill for the above dinner, food, water and coffees but excluding the wine came in at €230.25 between four persons (€57.56pp). The wine was billed separately.
Reasonable pricing for very up-market fine dining cuisine.
This is one of our favorite restaurants. The food is always amazing and delicious, and no matter what we order we are always delighted with the meal. Service is always efficient, with the servers very polite.
