Momentum at European Democratic Party's Leaders' Summit in Brussels Arnold Cassola addresses EDP Summit in Brussels

Momentum Chairperson Arnold Cassola was one of the speakers at the European Democratic Party Leaders' Summit, held in Brussels at the Musee de la Poste.
During the plenary session, Cassola addressed an audience of EU Commissioners, Members of the European Parliament, and political leaders from the EDP and Renew Europe group.

His speech focused on the importance of multilateralism and rule of law in an increasingly volatile global context. Highlighting the consequences of unilateral military actions and the erosion of international law in regions such as Gaza and Ukraine, Cassola emphasized that “institutions like the International Criminal Court remain absolutely crucial.”

He noted the alarming trend of undermining legal frameworks both internationally and within EU member states. Referring to recent developments in Malta, Cassola criticized local policies that erode citizens’ access to justice and highlighted SLAPP lawsuits used to silence journalists and civil society.

“Press freedom, transparency, and accountability cannot survive in isolated pockets; they require European-wide protection,” he stated, calling for stronger EU-level penalties for those misusing the legal system to intimidate.

Cassola concluded his intervention by reaffirming Momentum’s commitment to democratic values, justice, and principled politics, stating:

“Our citizens need to know that there are those like us who uphold the rule of law, defend human dignity, and maintain commitment to democratic values even in turbulent times.”

The event brought together liberal and democratic leaders from across Europe to discuss shared challenges and strategic priorities in today’s geopolitical climate.
