77 projects in one year
Public Works boosts sports facilities with 77 projects across Malta.
The Public Works Department has carried out a total of 77 projects benefiting 21 sports organisations across Malta and Gozo, with a combined investment exceeding €250,000. This initiative forms part of the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthen voluntary and community-based sports associations by providing them with safe, modern, and accessible facilities.
During a visit to the Lija Athletics F.C. Nursery, Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia explained that such projects enable local clubs and nurseries to focus more on their members and athletes, improving the overall environment in which young people train and grow.
Farrugia noted that each project, no matter its scale, contributes to the long-term vision of a stronger sports culture across the islands. “Through Public Works, we’re ensuring that every voluntary organisation has the right support to continue promoting health, teamwork, and community spirit,” he said.
The projects completed over the past year include maintenance of sports grounds, refurbishment of changing rooms, regeneration of facilities, and resurfacing of pitches. Notably, Public Works also played a role in the recent inauguration of Malta’s first FIFA Arena mini-pitch in St Paul’s Bay.
This collaboration between the government and sports associations reflects an ongoing effort to sustain investment in the voluntary sector and promote a culture of active living across all generations.
