The Maltese Herald calls for accountability following an incident involving a journalist at an MSJA reception.
The editorial team of The Maltese Herald unequivocally condemns the aggressive and boorish behaviour displayed by Antvin Monsigneur towards a journalist from this newsroom. The incident took place yesterday during a reception hosted by the Malta Sports Journalists Association.
Sports journalist Gerald Fenech, a registered member of the association, attended the reception following a formal invitation extended to all members. The conduct directed towards him occurred in a professional setting and is considered wholly unacceptable by this editorial board.
Mr Monsigneur currently serves as President of the Malta Sports Journalists Association and is also employed as a Senior Manager with the Lands Authority. At the time of the incident, he was the subject of an investigation published by The Maltese Herald.
The Maltese Herald will be making all relevant and necessary inquiries to ensure that this incident is addressed with the seriousness it warrants and that appropriate accountability is enforced.
This episode unfolds at a time when political discourse in Malta is focused on strengthening legal and institutional protections for journalists. It is therefore imperative to reaffirm the fundamental role of journalism in a democratic society and to insist on zero tolerance for any actions that undermine press freedom, professional integrity, or the safety of journalists.
