Since World War II, few countries have endured the scale of devastation that Ukraine now faces. Until recently, the enormity of the destruction could only be seen in fragments.
In a groundbreaking effort, my colleagues have published the first comprehensive overview of the damage. Through detailed analysis of years of satellite data, they have meticulously documented the destruction of each town, each street, and each building. In cities like Marinka, the devastation is so complete that not a single resident remains. Beyond losing their homes, countless people have lost their communities and histories.
"I can see everything from my old life if I shut my eyes," said Iryna Hrushkovksa, 34, who grew up in Marinka. "But if I open my eyes, it’s all gone."
