Eurostat reports a 17% decrease in first-time asylum applications in the European Union for June 2024 compared to the same month in 2023. In total, 70,375 non-EU citizens applied for international protection, with Syrians, Venezuelans, and Afghans making up the largest groups of applicants.
Germany, Spain, Italy, and France received the majority of applications, accounting for 76% of all first-time applicants. A total of 2,395 unaccompanied minors, mostly from Syria, Afghanistan, and Egypt, also sought asylum in the EU during this period.
