In July 2024, the number of first-time asylum applicants in EU countries reached 74,695, marking a 7.5% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. This data, released by Eurostat, highlights a shift in asylum applications, as well as a notable rise in subsequent applicants, which increased by 26.2% to 7,145.
The largest groups of asylum seekers in July came from Syria, Afghanistan, and Venezuela. The majority of applications were filed in Germany, Italy, Spain, and France, which together accounted for 74% of all first-time applicants. Germany alone received 18,505 applications.
Unaccompanied minors also formed a significant portion of the applicants, with nearly 2,985 seeking asylum, mostly from Syria, Afghanistan, and Egypt. Germany topped the list for receiving asylum applications from minors.
