Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington today, aiming to strengthen ties and prevent India from becoming a target of Trump’s trade and immigration policies.
Despite Modi’s repeated emphasis on his warm relationship with Trump, experts note that trade tensions could pose a challenge. Trump has criticized India’s tariffs and growing trade surplus with the U.S., often mentioning India alongside China as an unfair trade partner.
According to Mujib Mashal, South Asia bureau chief, Modi is expected to highlight India's cooperation on Trump's concerns, particularly on tariffs and immigration. In an effort to ease tensions, Modi could offer reduced duties on certain U.S. exports, including bourbon and pecans, which are key to Republican-voting states.
With U.S.-India trade relations under scrutiny, the meeting will be crucial in shaping the future of bilateral economic and diplomatic ties.
