Tensions between Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky escalated after Trump labeled Zelensky a “dictator”, accusing him of using U.S. aid to fuel war with Russia. In a social media post, Trump omitted any mention of Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea or its full-scale invasion in 2022.
Trump also downplayed America’s role in Ukraine’s security, stating, “This war is far more important to Europe than it is to us. We have a big, beautiful ocean as separation.”
The dispute follows U.S.-Russia peace talks in Saudi Arabia that excluded Ukraine. Trump later suggested that Ukraine had started the war, prompting Zelensky to push back, saying Trump had been “caught in a web of disinformation.”
