Mousa Abu Marzouk, head of Hamas’s foreign relations office, stated in an interview with The New York Times that he would not have supported the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel if he had foreseen the extent of devastation it would bring to Gaza. Israel’s military response has left much of the enclave in ruins and caused the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinians.
It remains unclear whether Abu Marzouk’s stance reflects broader sentiment within Hamas leadership, which has generally maintained a more hardline position. His remarks may also be an attempt to influence ongoing negotiations with Israel.
