Britain Plans to Increase Military Spending

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced plans to significantly boost military spending by 2027, a move aimed at demonstrating the country’s commitment to burden-sharing ahead of his meeting with President Trump at the White House.

The proposed increase would see an additional £13.4 billion ($17 billion) allocated annually to defense, funded by reductions in overseas development aid. While Starmer acknowledged the cuts as regrettable, he described them as a necessary adjustment to address evolving security challenges.

Recent remarks from Trump regarding Ukraine have heightened concerns over the U.S.'s long-term commitment to European defense. Meanwhile, NATO’s secretary general has urged member states to exceed 3% of their economic output in defense spending.
