Syria’s New Leader Called for National Unity

Ahmed al-Shara, Syria’s interim president, urged national unity during a two-day conference in Damascus focused on shaping the country's future after decades of dictatorship. The gathering included representatives from Syria’s diverse religious and ethnic groups, along with journalists, community leaders, and activists.

However, a key faction was missing—the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a U.S.-backed militia controlling much of northeastern Syria. The government had insisted that the group disarm and integrate into a unified national military as a condition for participating in the talks.
