A Maltese parliamentary delegation, composed of Carmelo Abela and Ivan Bartolo, participated in the 16th meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group on Europol (JPSG) in Warsaw, Poland. The JPSG plays a key role in politically monitoring Europol’s activities, ensuring that the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation operates within its mission while safeguarding fundamental rights and freedoms.
Established under Article 51 of Regulation (EU) 2016/794, the JPSG meets twice a year—once in the member state holding the EU Council Presidency and once at the European Parliament in Brussels. The group is co-chaired by the parliament of the presiding member state and the European Parliament, ensuring balanced oversight.
During the Warsaw meeting, the Maltese delegation contributed to discussions on Europol’s initiatives, including cross-border crime, cybersecurity threats, and the protection of individual rights in law enforcement operations. Their participation reaffirmed Malta’s commitment to EU-wide law enforcement cooperation, transparency, and democratic oversight.
