During a meeting at the White House with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, President Donald Trump expressed confidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin would uphold any future Ukraine peace deal.
“I think he’ll keep his word,” Trump stated. “I’ve known him for a long time now.”
Trump’s remarks starkly contrasted with Starmer’s position. The British prime minister had come to Washington to pledge troops for a postwar peacekeeping effort and urge Trump not to abandon Ukraine to Russian demands.
When asked whether the U.S. would assist Britain if Russia broke the agreement, Trump’s response was uncertain. Within a minute, he appeared to say no, then yes, then no again, concluding, “They don’t need help.”
