Syria’s Leader Called for Unity Amid Violence

Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Shara, appealed for calm and unity yesterday following days of clashes between government fighters and forces loyal to Bashar al-Assad, the ousted dictator. “We call on Syrians to be reassured because the country has the fundamentals for survival,” al-Shara said.

The violence, which erupted last week, has been the most intense since Assad’s government fell in early December. More than 1,000 people have been killed, including around 700 civilians, mostly due to government attacks, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based group that has monitored the Syrian conflict since 2011. The information could not be independently verified.
