Israel launched a large-scale attack across the Gaza Strip early this morning, marking its first major military operation in the region in months. The strikes raised questions about the future of the cease-fire deal between Israel and Hamas that had been in place since mid-January.
According to the Gazan Ministry of Health, at least 44 Palestinians, including five children, were killed, and more than 50 others were injured in the assault. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the strikes were carried out in response to Hamas’s “repeated refusal” to release Israeli hostages.
