Putin and Trump to Discuss Ukraine Amid Cease-Fire Uncertainty

Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump are set to hold a phone conversation today, according to the Kremlin, as speculation grows over Trump’s remarks about their agenda.

This will be the first known discussion between the two leaders since Ukraine signaled its willingness to support a U.S.-backed monthlong cease-fire—if Russia agrees to the same terms. Trump stated that the conversation would include discussions on territorial disputes and the future of Ukrainian power plants, adding that talks had already begun about “dividing up certain assets.”

While Trump has expressed urgency in brokering a truce, Putin appears to be leveraging the situation for additional concessions. The Russian leader has yet to agree to the cease-fire and has set conditions that could delay or undermine any potential agreement.
