In a dramatic incident yesterday, a top general led Bolivian military members in an attempt to storm the presidential palace, only to quickly retreat in what appeared to be a failed coup.
Footage aired on Bolivian television showed a camouflaged military vehicle ramming a palace door in La Paz, the administrative capital, with soldiers attempting to enter. However, the forces, led by General Juan José Zuñiga, soon withdrew and were replaced by police officers loyal to the democratically elected president, Luis Arce.
The incursion into the palace lasted just three hours. As the situation unfolded, it became evident that General Zuñiga’s coup attempt lacked significant support, leading to his arrest. Before his detention, Zuñiga baselessly claimed that President Arce had requested him to stage the coup.
