New Details Emerge About Trump’s Would-Be Assassin

In a private call, F.B.I. officials informed members of Congress that the gunman who attempted to assassinate Donald Trump had searched for images of both Trump and President Biden, as well as dates of Trump’s appearances and the Democratic National Convention. However, the bureau’s analysis of two phones found in his possession revealed no strong partisan political views.

Next week, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle will face intense scrutiny over the assassination attempt. She is set to appear before two congressional committees investigating the shooting. Law enforcement, Congress, and federal agencies are also conducting inquiries.

Representative Ronny Jackson of Texas, Trump’s former White House doctor, described Trump’s injuries from the attack. “The bullet took a little bit off the top of his ear, an area that bleeds a lot,” he said. “The dressing is bulked up to absorb the blood, so he doesn’t have to walk around with bloody gauze on his ear.”

At the Republican National Convention, Senator J.D. Vance, Trump’s running mate, accepted the party’s nomination for vice president in a prime-time speech, linking his challenging upbringing to issues faced by the American working class.

In the Upshot, Times reporters asked 65 convention attendees six questions about their political views.
