In an Oval Office appearance alongside former President Donald Trump, billionaire Elon Musk made sweeping and unsubstantiated claims that the U.S. bureaucracy has been infiltrated by corrupt officials approving funds for fraudsters. (We fact-checked Musk’s remarks.)
Trump established the Department of Government Efficiency, which Musk leads, with the goal of overhauling federal bureaucracy—including cutting the federal workforce. However, Musk has come under growing criticism for allegedly operating without oversight or accountability.
“All of our actions are maximally transparent,” Musk stated. However, reports suggest that his team is operating in secrecy, unexpectedly entering federal agencies and accessing sensitive data systems. Despite holding the title of "special government employee," Musk's financial disclosure will not be made public, according to the White House.
