Biden Under Scrutiny at NATO Summit Amid Re-Election Uncertainty

The NATO summit, marking the alliance's 75th anniversary, aimed to project a message of strength and unity among Western allies, particularly in the wake of over two years of conflict in Ukraine. However, the spotlight has shifted to President Joe Biden amid growing questions about his potential bid for a second term and the implications of a possible return of Donald Trump to the presidency.

Hosting the three-day event in Washington, Biden faces intense scrutiny regarding his ability to lead for another four years. Embracing the attention, Biden remarked, "I guess a good way to judge me is to watch me at the summit — and to see how the allies react. Come listen. See what they say."

During his presidency, Trump threatened to withdraw the U.S. from NATO, labeling the alliance as "obsolete." This year, he stated that he would allow Russia to act freely against any NATO member he deemed an inadequate contributor.

Despite significant concerns, top congressional Democrats have signaled a reluctance to push Biden aside, at least for now. Vice President Kamala Harris finds herself in a particularly delicate position, being the heir apparent amidst the uncertainty surrounding Biden's future.
