Biden Grants Protections to Undocumented Spouses of U.S. Citizens

President Biden announced significant new legal protections yesterday for undocumented immigrants who have been living in the U.S. for years and are married to American citizens. This move marks one of the most extensive presidential actions to support immigrants in over a decade.

The new policy will shield 500,000 people from deportation, grant them work permits, and offer a pathway to citizenship. Additionally, the benefits will extend to approximately 50,000 children of these undocumented spouses who have become stepchildren to U.S. citizens. According to Biden administration officials, the program is expected to commence by the end of the summer.

“These couples have been raising families, sending their kids to church and school, paying taxes, contributing to our country,” Biden stated at the White House. “They’ve been living in the United States all this time with fear and uncertainty. We can fix that.”

Following the announcement, allies of Donald Trump criticized Biden, accusing him of being lenient on border control. Speaker Mike Johnson remarked that the president was “granting amnesty to hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens.”
