In the weeks and months leading up to his recent debate performance, President Joe Biden appeared increasingly confused or listless, according to current and former officials. These lapses have become more frequent and pronounced, raising concerns among those close to him.
Biden, 81, has not consistently shown these signs. Many individuals who have interacted with him since the debate describe him as alert, coherent, and capable. However, there is a consensus that he is not the same as he was when he took office three and a half years ago.
During a speech in Virginia yesterday, Biden acknowledged that he "fell asleep on the stage" during the debate, attributing his poor performance to extensive travel in the two weeks prior. "It’s not an excuse but an explanation," he said.
His opponent, Donald Trump, 78, has also shown signs of decline over the years, often making incoherent statements. While voters have expressed concerns about Trump’s age, the level of anxiety is not as pronounced as it is for Biden.
This growing anxiety has led several Democratic officials, who had previously supported Biden, to publicly voice their concerns for the first time.
