At a rally in Minnesota on Saturday night, former President Donald Trump made it clear he has abandoned the call for national unity he expressed after surviving an assassination attempt two weeks ago. “I haven’t changed,” Trump declared. “Maybe I’ve gotten worse.” He went on to label Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic nominee, as “evil,” “unhinged,” and “sick.” Here’s the latest from the presidential race.
Trump’s inflammatory remarks came as Democrats intensified their own attacks, following a strategy introduced by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Walz described Trump and his vice-presidential pick, Senator JD Vance, as “weird people.” Pete Buttigieg, the Secretary of Transportation, commented that Trump was becoming “older and stranger,” while Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer characterized Vance as “weird” and “erratic.”
In a separate development, the Harris campaign announced it had raised $200 million in the week since President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. Notably, two-thirds of this amount came from first-time donors. Despite this financial boost, a campaign spokesperson cautioned that the election would be “very close,” and Harris herself acknowledged that Democrats were the “underdogs.”
Regarding her running mate, Harris is reportedly considering several men who, like her, have served as state attorneys general.
On the cultural front, if elected, Kamala Harris would become the first Asian American president, marking a significant milestone for a complex and diverse identity.
