In a dramatic escalation of its conflict with Russia, Ukraine has made significant inroads into Russian territory following its unexpected incursion over a week ago. Ukrainian forces have reported capturing hundreds of Russian soldiers as they push deeper into the region.
In response, Russia has evacuated over 130,000 residents from nearby areas and has declared a state of emergency in one affected region. Moscow has also commenced a partial troop withdrawal from Ukraine to bolster its defenses against Kyiv’s advancing forces, according to U.S. and Ukrainian officials.
Currently, Ukraine is focused on consolidating its gains. President Volodymyr Zelensky has suggested the establishment of military administrations in the newly captured areas, while the interior minister has announced plans to create a "buffer zone" in western Russia to safeguard border towns and villages.
