Manslaughter Investigation Launched
Italian prosecutors have initiated a manslaughter and negligent shipwreck investigation following the tragic sinking of the luxury yacht, Bayesian, off the coast of Sicily. Seven people, including British tech businessman Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah, lost their lives. Prosecutors are examining potential culpability among the captain, crew, shipbuilders, and others.
Downburst, Not Waterspout, Caused the Disaster
Contrary to initial reports of a waterspout, investigators revealed that a downburst—an intense downward rush of air from a cloud—likely caused the sinking. The unpredictable gusts from the downburst may have overwhelmed the yacht, which was moored about half a mile off the coast during the storm.
Several Bodies Found Together in Cabins
Six of the seven victims were found together in cabins on the yacht's left side, suggesting they may have sought refuge there as the vessel began to list. The first body discovered was that of the yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas, found outside the wreck. Investigators are probing whether the passengers were asleep and unable to escape.
Crew's Obligation to Stay in Sicily
There is currently no legal requirement for the yacht’s captain or crew to remain in Sicily, though they are expected to be available for the ongoing investigation. Authorities still have questions for the captain and are attempting to conduct alcohol and drug tests on the crew.
No Post-Mortem Examinations Conducted Yet
Investigators have yet to perform post-mortem examinations on the victims. The delay is attributed to the need to complete several preliminary investigative steps before autopsies can proceed.
