Britain Shuts Down Last Coal Plant, Marking End of Coal Power Era

Britain has officially shut down its last coal-burning power station, becoming the first major industrialized nation to eliminate coal as a source of electricity. This historic step is particularly significant, as Britain was the first country to industrialize using vast amounts of coal during the Industrial Revolution, laying the groundwork for global reliance on the fossil fuel.

The closure aligns with the British government’s ambitious target of generating all electricity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030. While oil and gas still account for the majority of the country’s power supply, renewables now make up 40% of the nation’s electricity production, a figure expected to grow in the coming years.
