As of August 2024, nearly 4.2 million non-EU citizens, primarily from Ukraine, were under temporary protection in the European Union, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Germany, Poland, and Czechia host the majority of these individuals.
The figures, released by Eurostat, show that while some countries saw an increase in those under protection, others, like Poland, saw slight decreases. The European Council recently extended temporary protection status to March 2026 to continue accommodating displaced Ukrainians.
